FPRI’s Annual Dinner

On November 13, over 400 movers and shakers in Philadelphia attended FPRI’s Annual Dinner, which this year honored Samuel J. Savitz and featured a keynote address by Kenneth M. Pollack on “America and the Middle East After Saddam.”

Mr. Savitz is founder and chairman of The Savitz Organization and serves on the boards of such institutions as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Philly Pops, the National Liberty Museum, the National Musuem of American Jewish History, and the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

FPRI will publish Dr. Pollack’s address separately. Printed below are the remarks by Mr. Savitz.

Remarks by Samuel J. Savitz

… As I gaze about the room, I’m gratified to observe so many friends and colleagues, and delighted that I’m able to share this evening with my, wife, Selma, our children, their spouses, and our grandson, Justin, representing his siblings and cousins.

I’m enormously proud, and simultaneously humbled to be tonight’s honoree, but with sufficient circumspect to realize that I do so as a proxy, representing those who each day carry out FPRI’s mission, and those who over the years have made FPRI the venerable institution that it is today: a national treasure that makes Philadelphia its jewel box.

To acknowledge their contribution, I would like to identify them, some by name, and others as a group, so that at least on this occasion their contribution might be recognized.

Foremost among these individuals was a great visionary, FPRI’s founder and earliest catalyst, Robert Strausz-Hupé. In 1955, nearly 50 years ago, he recognized the need for an independent think tank, devoted to disseminating information on “foreign policy” issues that might affect our national welfare and security. Until his death in 2002, at the age of 98, Ambassador Strausz-Hupe continued to play an influencial role in FPRI’s affairs and remains an inspiration.

Second is a small, but highly dedicated staff that, on a modest budget, churns out an enormous quantity of material, considered by its peers to be of impeccable quality and, by our members, an indispensable resource.

Third are the members of FPRI’s Board of Trustees, who selflessly spend countless hours and contribute generously from personal resources to finance a significant portion of FPRI’s annual budget.

And last but hardly least, there is the inimitable Harvey Sicherman, FPRI’s President, whose prolific written output never ceases to amaze me for its scope of topic, content and clarity.

So tonight, as surrogate, I accept honoree recognition on behalf of FPRI’s Board of Trustees, officers and staff, and on my own behalf, extend a deserved thank you to Susan Goldberg and members of her committee for the time and effort expended in making tonight a success.

And, finally, I thank each of you for being here and sharing this evening with us.
